The Pont de la Chapelle (or "Kapellbrücke" in German) is Europe's oldest covered wooden bridge. Built-in 1333, it was originally part of the city's fortifications. An essential part of any visit to Lucerne, it is one of Switzerland's most photographed monuments. Stretching 204 m in length, it spans the River Reuss, providing a bucolic link between the two banks along with Lucerne's Old Town.
It is instantly recognizable thanks to its unusual silhouette, topped by its octagonal "water tower", and its feet in the river, like a small castle keep. It was long the city's tallest building, combining the functions of a landmark for the city's citizens, a hide for keeping lookout, a prison and torture room for its enemies. The Kapelbrukle in Lucerne is now Switzerland's most visited and most photographed landmark. This gold bar is certain to please all those who enjoy authentic landscapes that are steeped in history.
