THE TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN GOLD COIN 1971
The Tunku Abdul Rahman Gold coin was Malaysia's very first commemorative coin, issued on 30th August 1971 by Bank Negara Malaysia to mark 13 years service as Prime Minister by Tunku Abdul Rhman Putra Al-Haj (Father of Independence / Father of Malaysia). Despite being a commemorative issue, it was legal tender (worth RM 100), and many holders opted to use it or melt it due to rising gold prices - making well- preserved specimens today relatively scarce. The coin was designed for Malaysia but struck by the Royal Mint in the UK on behalf of BNM. Malaysia did not have its own minting facilities (the Kilang Wang Bank Negara Malaysia in Shah Alam only started operation in 1986.
