The Mexican Silver Libertad:

The Libertad is Mexico's treasure coin and is minted at Casa de Moneda de Mexico, the oldest mint in North America, founded in 1535 by royal decree. The coin was issued by the Spanish crown and carries the first Viceroy of New Spain, Antonio de Mendoza, creating the first mint in America. This mint produced the famous Spanish "Pieces of Eight" coins upon which the original United States Dollar, the Canadian Dollar, and the Chinese Yuan (introduced in 1889) were based. The Spanish silver coin is widely recognized as the first World Currency (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_dollar).

Silver Mexican Libertads have low mintages for bullion coins giving them a bit of a numismatic value and their newer design is second to none. These coins are rapidly gaining popularity in the United States and elsewhere and the 40mm .999 fine 1 oz Silver coins are very popular with collectors and investors.

On one side of the coin is a winged Victoria of Mexican Independence Victory Column in front of a landscape with the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccihuatl. The opposite side shows the coat of arms of Mexico  (an eagle with a snake in its mouth, standing on a cactus) in the center surrounded by historical Mexican coats of arms which recalls the founding of Mexico City, then called Tenochtitlan.

Please note that unlike other bullion coins the Libertad does not have a nominal Mexican Peso currency value. This is a conscious decision by the Central Bank of Mexico as they consider the value to be determined by the silver spot price plus a premium. As of 2010 Mexico is the largest silver exporting country and there is considerable political movement by state governors to back the currency with silver.
